Stephanie Rawlings ( Baltimore’s Mayor) and DDm
Written By Ryan Lyons
Very few artists in Baltimore dig into their art like DDm. His music, which hints at homosexuality, struggles within the black community and conflicts with sexuality, is probably a story that Baltimore needs more than over done stories of tattooed tears and street action. What Baltimore needs is a figure to step outside of the box and add more truth to our identity. True Hip-Hop and pure artistry is vulnerability.
He confides in his music more than any other current Hip-Hop artist I can think of. DDm, often, drops songs via his soundcloud and each time you can see the growth of the gender-bending, ghetto, at times emotional emcee.
The latest song’s he dropped, via his soundcloud, confirm his growth as an artist. On “Piece Of My Heart” he raps, “mass media don’t like me for me, making examples of what I should be.” He goes on, “ Tear drops, falling and they don’t stop cause my block call me names and throw rocks. Throw shade and then they take shots!” It’s one of the more poignant verses I’ve heard from the Baltimore born artist.
Hip-Hop is a culture that can be homophobic and close minded. “Piece Of My Heart” tells a story that doesn’t fall on deaf ears. It feels real. He also takes a stab at 2 Chainz’s “Spend It” getting into street rap character hitting the bass with comedic and exciting metaphors. I’m excited to see that he has a new album coming entitled Winter And The Tinmans Heart. Stay Tuned
